Field Laboratory

The laboratory has few small collections on hand. There are samples of minerals, crystals and fossils. Skeletal remains of species from Newfoundland and mainland Canada, are available for comparative analysis.

Catlinite is more commonly known as pipestone. It is a fine-grained sedimentary stone made of clay minerals. The stone is found in southern Minnesota in the region of Pipestone. Canadian quarries are no longer used.

The origin and species of the fossilized clam, is unknown. The shell is encased in sandstone and the details are remarkable. It was handed down from Rose Boyer, Anita’s material grandmother.

Gadus morhua (Atlantic cod) skull. These remains belong to one of four specimens at the Laboratory. Marine species make up the majority of skeletal remains at poor li moond.
The facility was established for convenience in the field. Researchers have access to dry storage, cold storage for organic samples, and two artifact wash stations. Photos can be taken in a well-lit and shadow free light box or with the digital trinocular biological microscope.
